Top Reasons to Consider Buying a Used or Certifed Pre-Owned (CPO) Vehicle
Thinking about buying used? Learn how Toyota Certified Used Vehicles (TCUV) compare to standard used cars and how Toyota Financial Services (TFS) can help you finance either option with confidence.
Buying a used vehicle can be a smart financial move, especially for value-conscious or first-time buyers looking for a great deal. But a used vehicle can also come with risk - so how do you know you’re getting reliability, value, and peace of mind? That’s where Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicles come in. CPOs are a car-buying option sitting between new and traditional used cars. CPO options—like Toyota Certified Used Vehicles (TCUV)—offer added protections like warranties, inspections, and financing advantages worth considering. We’ll explain it all here.
Let’s start with the basics. What does ‘Certified Pre-Owned’ actually mean and how is it different than a traditional used car? While we’re at it, is a Certified Pre-Owned Toyota different than other certified pre-owned vehicles? A Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicle has passed a defined, documented certification process and comes with protections, like a warranty.
TFS offers financing through participating Toyota dealers for used and CPO vehicles. Our goal is to help you make the vehicle purchase that’s best for you. With TFS and your Toyota dealer, you’re supported by flexible financing solutions designed to meet a variety of needs and budgets.
When a vehicle carries the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle (TCUV) badge, it’s an even better indication that the vehicle is in great shape. Every TCUV passes a rigorous quality assurance inspection before it’s certified. Toyota's Gold Certified vehicles must pass a 160-point quality assurance inspection. Silver Certified vehicles undergo a 136-point inspection. TCUV inspections cover the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, tire tread and MUCH more ensuring the vehicle meets Toyota's standards for safety and reliability before it's ever offered for sale.
Gold Certified vehicles come with a robust package: a 1-year/12,000-mile limited comprehensive warranty and a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, along with seven years or 100,000 miles of roadside assistance. Silver Certified vehicles include a 12-month/12,000-mile limited powertrain warranty and 24-hour roadside assistance for the same period. Please note that some restrictions apply. See the TCUV Warranty Supplement for details.
When it’s time to buy, it’s smart to take a little time to do your homework. Understanding how financing works before you walk into a dealership is one of the best things you can do for your budget — and your confidence. Whether you're considering a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle (TCUV) or a traditional used car, TFS has flexible lending options.
Here's what you need to know:
With a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle, eligible buyers may have access to competitive financing options and, because it’s pre-owned, the vehicle may cost less than a comparable new model. A standard used Toyota — one purchased outside the TCUV program — is also eligible for financing through TFS, with the same great service. The rate you receive will depend on your credit profile and the terms negotiated at the time of purchase.
It makes sense when you think about it. A standard used vehicle — without certification — carries more uncertainty from a lender's perspective. Its history may be less complete, and there's no manufacturer warranty backing the asset. When lenders have more confidence in the asset, financing terms may be more competitive.
When you’re deciding between a TCUV or a standard used car, think about it this way. A non-certified used vehicle will generally carry a lower price tag than a comparable TCUV, and for buyers working within a tight budget, that difference can matter.
Now let’s talk about budgeting for a car payment. There are specific factors that determine what your monthly payment will be. These include the vehicle you select, the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), the length of your finance term, the size of your down payment, and the total amount you choose to finance. Each factor affects the others. Example: the larger your down payment, the less you will need to finance.
Whether you're purchasing a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle or a traditional used car, Toyota Financial Services (TFS) offers a financing experience designed to be straightforward, flexible, and fully integrated with your Toyota dealer — from prequalification all the way through monthly account management.
At the end of the day, CPO vehicles—especially Toyota Certified Used Vehicles—offer a strong middle ground between affordability and peace of mind. They can offer the buyer confidence of a new car at a lower price. When paired with financing from TFS, TCUVs can be a smart, confident way to get behind the wheel.
